Normalize a quoted battery package without using MSRP
Choose a supported catalog battery or use manual mode for another product. Confirm full battery units and enter only the battery-package total from your installer proposal. Home Solar Atlas normalizes the quote by usable storage; it does not compare the result with a market-price benchmark.
When browser session storage is available, a positive quoted package price is saved only for the current tab together with the exact technical scenario fingerprint. Reloading the same scenario can restore the price; opening a different battery/unit/manual-spec scenario does not reuse a mismatched saved price.
Tesla Powerwall 3
* Verified charge-power figures are scaled only for full battery units in this screening context. Expansion packs, gateways, conductors, controllers and manufacturer architecture can change the installed system limit. Powerwall 3 itself is rated for 5 kW maximum continuous AC charge power. Tesla lists 8 kW for one Powerwall 3 with up to three Expansion units, so expansion-based systems should use the manual system charge-limit override instead of simple per-unit scaling.
The calculator URL automatically preserves only the selected battery model and full-unit count. Installer package price is deliberately removed from the URL. When you open the 72-hour test, a positive quoted battery-package total is carried through browser session storage only when available, evaluated only for that exact configuration and never extrapolated to another battery count.
“Compare with another battery quote” uses a one-time browser-session transfer. The current package price and technical configuration are not added to the destination URL.
Review the written quote before normalizing the price
Quoted $/usable kWh is useful only when the battery identity, full-unit count, usable storage and package scope are understood. Use the interactive checklist to verify the power, charging, gateway/controller, backup-panel, electrical-upgrade, permit, tax and warranty fields that can make two battery package totals look comparable when they are not.
Reload the same technical scenario without putting price in the URL
When browser session storage is available, a positive battery-package price is saved for the current tab together with an exact technical scenario fingerprint. A reload restores that price only when the battery selection or manual mode, full-unit count and manual technical assumptions still match.
If the scenario changes, a mismatched stored price is not restored for a newly opened URL. You can also use Clear private quoted price at any time. The shareable calculator URL continues to contain technical assumptions only, not the installer package total.
Move one quote into side-by-side comparison privately
Compare with another battery quote sends the current battery/manual technical configuration, full-unit count and positive package price when available through a one-time browser-session transfer. It does not append the package price to the destination URL.
Compare Battery Quotes consumes that transfer, starts the imported package as the first comparison entry and gives you a second package to edit. The explicit transfer replaces an older private comparison draft rather than silently merging two different sets of prices.
Have two or three battery packages?
Use Compare Battery Quotes to put multiple installer storage packages on the same usable-kWh basis without uploading complete solar proposals or declaring the lowest normalized number an automatic winner.
Why normalize a battery quote by usable kWh?
Battery proposals are difficult to compare when one installer quotes a single larger battery and another quotes several smaller full units. Dividing the confirmed battery-package total by the installed usable storage creates one capacity-normalized number for the specific proposal.
That number should stay separate from solar-only dollars per watt. Solar $/W normalizes the PV portion of a proposal; battery $/usable kWh normalizes the quoted storage package. Neither metric replaces review of the actual scope.
Use manual mode for another battery
If the quoted battery is not one of the current Home Solar Atlas catalog models, choose Other / manual battery. Enter usable capacity per full unit directly from current manufacturer documentation or the installer's technical proposal. Continuous output is optional context; a total system charge-power limit is required before the manual configuration can be sent into the 72-hour simulator.
Manual values remain user-entered assumptions. Home Solar Atlas does not infer an uncataloged battery's chemistry, surge rating, charging power, warranty, compatibility or expansion behavior. The quoted package price remains on the quote-calculator page and is not attached to manual outage economics.
What the calculator deliberately does not assume
- No manufacturer MSRP is inserted.
- No national or local battery-market average is used as a value score.
- No add-on expansion pack is silently treated as another complete battery unit.
- No missing charge-power specification is treated as zero or inferred from discharge power.
- No quoted package total is extrapolated to a different battery count.
- No manual value is relabeled as a verified Home Solar Atlas specification.
Compare more than storage price
Before signing, compare usable kWh, continuous discharge kW, short-duration surge capability, verified or explicitly entered charging-power context, backup controls, warranty, expansion architecture and the installer scope around the battery.
Frequently asked questions
What does battery price per usable kWh mean?
It is the quoted battery-package total divided by the usable storage capacity of the confirmed full battery units. Home Solar Atlas uses current catalog usable-capacity specifications for supported models or the usable capacity you explicitly enter in manual mode.
What should I verify before entering a battery quote price?
Confirm the exact battery model or manual usable capacity, full-unit count and the battery-package portion of the proposal. Also review power and charging limits, gateway or controller scope, backup-panel work, electrical upgrades, permits, taxes and written warranty responsibilities before treating the normalized price as a complete comparison metric.
Will my quoted battery package price survive a page reload?
When browser session storage is available, a positive package price can be restored for the current tab only when the battery model or manual mode, full-unit count and manual technical assumptions still match the saved scenario. A different scenario does not reuse a mismatched saved price, and the price is never written into the calculator URL.
Can I move this battery quote into side-by-side comparison without putting the price in a URL?
Yes. Compare with another battery quote uses a one-time browser-session transfer to open Compare Battery Quotes with the current model or manual technical fields, unit count and positive package price when available. The transfer is consumed in the destination tab, is not added to the destination URL and takes priority over an older private comparison draft for that explicit navigation.
Can I use the calculator for a battery that is not in the Home Solar Atlas catalog?
Yes. Choose Other / manual battery and enter the current manufacturer or installer technical values yourself. Manual usable capacity is used only for quote normalization, while continuous output and system charge-power limit remain clearly labeled user-entered assumptions rather than verified Home Solar Atlas specifications.
Is the lowest quoted battery dollars per usable kWh always the best deal?
No. Installer packages can include different gateway or controller hardware, electrical upgrades, labor, permits, taxes, discounts and backup-panel scope. The metric normalizes storage capacity but does not prove that two proposals include equivalent work.
Does this calculator use MSRP or a battery market-price benchmark?
No. The calculator starts with a blank price field and uses only the battery-package total you enter from an installer proposal. It does not insert MSRP, an average market price or an automatic value rating.
Can I test the quoted battery during a multi-day outage?
Yes. Catalog batteries can carry their confirmed model, unit count and quote-price context into the Home Solar Atlas 72-hour outage simulator. Manual batteries can carry user-entered usable capacity, unit count and manual system charge-power limit, but their package price is not attached to the outage economics because there is no verified catalog identity for that product.
