Most grid-tied solar systems shut down when the grid fails
A rooftop solar array can be producing sunlight at the exact moment your neighborhood loses power and your home can still go dark. Standard grid-tied systems are designed to stop exporting electricity when the utility grid is down so they do not energize lines that crews may be working on.
That safety behavior is why owning solar panels does not automatically mean a home has backup power.
Backup requires the right system architecture
A solar-plus-storage system can keep part or all of a home powered during an outage when it includes compatible controls, an inverter that supports backup operation and a battery or other approved storage configuration.
Do not assume that simply adding a battery model to a proposal guarantees whole-home backup. The electrical design, transfer equipment, backed-up circuits and inverter power limits all matter.
Essential-load backup is different from whole-home backup
Many homeowners get better value by deciding which loads actually need to remain available during an outage instead of sizing storage for every appliance in the house.
- Refrigerator and freezer.
- Internet equipment and phone charging.
- Lighting and selected outlets.
- Medical or accessibility equipment.
- Well pump or other critical motor loads where the battery can support startup power.
Solar can extend battery runtime during a long outage
If the system is designed to operate while islanded from the grid, daytime solar can recharge the battery and reduce how quickly stored energy is depleted. Actual runtime still depends on weather, seasonal production, battery capacity and household load behavior.
A battery that lasts through one night under light loads may last much less time if electric heating, central air conditioning, cooking or EV charging remains active.
Questions to ask before buying backup
Make the installer describe the outage behavior in writing rather than relying on general claims such as whole-home capable.
- Which circuits or appliances will remain powered when the grid fails?
- What is the battery's usable kWh and continuous kW output?
- Can solar recharge the battery while the grid is down?
- What large motor or HVAC loads can start successfully?
- How does the system restart after the battery reaches its reserve limit?
