Performance monitoring is the first maintenance tool
A homeowner does not need to climb onto the roof to know whether a solar system is working. Monitoring data, inverter alerts and utility production information can reveal a sustained performance problem that deserves investigation.
Compare output over similar seasons rather than reacting to one cloudy day. Weather, temperature and seasonal sunlight naturally change production.
Keep the array free from obvious obstructions
Trees, new construction, leaves, heavy debris and unusual soiling can reduce production. Vegetation management and a safe visual inspection from the ground are often more useful than routine roof access.
Cleaning is site-specific
There is no universal schedule requiring every residential array to be professionally washed. Rainfall, dust, pollen, wildfire residue, bird activity, roof pitch and local conditions determine whether cleaning may be useful.
If cleaning is needed, follow manufacturer and installer guidance and avoid unsafe roof access or methods that could damage modules, wiring or roof surfaces.
Watch the inverter and electrical equipment
Panels are only one part of the system. Inverters, rapid-shutdown equipment, batteries, disconnects and monitoring hardware can generate alerts or require service. Keep installer and manufacturer documentation so fault codes can be interpreted correctly.
Inspect after severe weather when appropriate
After hail, high winds, flooding, fire exposure or other severe weather, look for visible damage from a safe location and review monitoring for unusual behavior. Do not touch damaged wiring or electrical equipment.
